Friends Instructional Association Records

Friends Instruction Association was organized in 1873 by Philadelphia Quaker women as A Mothers Meeting. Originally part of the Penn Sewing School, the group incorporated in 1876 as Friends Instruction Association, and Philadelphia Monthly Meeting provided a meeting space in the Race Street meeting house. Its purpose was to provide poor women regardless of race, religion or nationality with the life skills to improve their condition and to furnish them with clothing.

Hannah J. Bailey Papers

The Hannah J. Bailey collection includes personal papers, correspondence, diaries and journals, published and unpublished articles, biographical information and memorabilia. The collection also contains material on Bailey's work with the national and world Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the National Council of Women, financial and legal papers of the Woman's Temperance Publishing Association, her work for social causes, her travels abroad, and her connection with the Society of Friends (Quakers).

Helen S. Judson Collected Sherwood Select School Papers

This collection contains the papers of Helen S. Judson, including correspondence while at the Sherwood Select School and from Emily Howland. It also contains typed transcripts of writings by Emily Howland, 1836-1929, and Sherwood Select School memorabilia.

In Her Own Right is a project executed by members of the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL), with funding from the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) and the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). Joel Bean Diary Transcripts

Joel Bean (1835-1914) and his wife, Hannah Elliott Bean (1830-1909), were prominent Quaker ministers in Iowa Yearly Meeting in the mid-nineteenth century when Quaker settlements were expanding in Iowa. Friends Historical Library holds a collection of Joel and Hannah Bean Papers (SFHL-RG5-012). Select materials were transcribed by Tom M. King of San Jose, CA, in 1998. The original materials have not been digitized, but the transcripts are available for download.
