Wilmington 6 mo 11th 1856.
Esteem'd Friend
Elijah Pennypacker. I herewith
forward to thee a small colour'd Boy, that
was bound by his mother to a young man
of good moral character, after staying
awhile with him, his master concluded
to go to Calafornia, and transferred his Indentures
to his Father, a drinking man, who
has no regular business, both himself and
wife abuse the boy very much and he
says he cannot live with them, I know
the mother of the boy she is quite respectable,
and wishes me to get him a good
place somewhere in Penna. I thought that
thyself or some of thy neighbors would be
willing to take him and raise him, and
give him some Education, when I see
his mother I will get his age, the boy
thinks he is about 15 years of age, has
always been employ'd in the House, but
is anxious to get to work on a farm
his mother Mary Handy lives about 9 miles
from here, If I find any men passing
that will be likely to [sent?] thee I will send
them on to thee, after the lad is fixed please
let me know where Lewis is, and how he
he suits, as his mother will be wanting
to hear from him no doubt, as ever
they friend,
Thos. Garrett.
N.B. I have given the Boy One Dollar
to pay his expenses. If he does well and
earns it, thee may send it to me at
some future day to help some one else.
If he does not fully earn it dont send
it.
