Jane Stuart Woolsey was an influential figure in relief work and nursing as well as a teacher of freedmen. Written on U.S.A. General Hospital, Fairfax Seminary stationery. Discusses recent events concerning army hospital personnel, including the controversies surrounding Surgeon General Hammond. Describes the substandard conditions of a regimental hospital and rebukes the inefficiency and ineffectiveness of the Medical Department. Disapproves of the social receptions held exclusively for the officers and ladies. Is working to establish a reading room and asks for donations of surplus books and magazines. Mentions the misplacement of a box of supplies sent to Gibbons. Says that Gibbons "can certainly influence the right people" within the Medical Department.
