New York Feb 9/74
My dear daughter Sally
My dress is 43
inches long [underlined] behind [/underlined], and 39
in front. That fact being
stated, I proceed to tell thee
how delighted Bonny was
with her pocket purse, as she
calls it, when she saw the
money, she looked too cunning
for anything. I think she
will know thee without a doubt
she [?] herself while we
work, and it makes the day
very short, that she [?] to
us, which is every 4th day
and sometimes more.
I enclose a snip from a Maine
paper about the Cobb family.
Just have I looked for said article,
and cannot find it
Ed Russell sent the same to
Mr Cobb, the [?] Maine
man calls for [?] for us all
who know any Cobbs, to send
[sideways along left margin]
the room over the letter. Thy loving Mother
particulars, as he is searching out
their pedigree. Knowing as thee
does, one Richard, [William Emerson], &
Louisa, I thought might give
valuable information. The
last of this week we shall look
for aunt Anna Maria & Ethel
who is coming with them. I own
to much anxiety on aunt Anna's
account. Maria said in a late
letter, her mother was perfectly
forlorn. Do not refer to it
in any letter, as we are careful
not to make it a subject of conversation,
and we like her to read
thy letters. Uncle Edward writes
but seldom and when he does
betrays lowness of mind.
I hope whatever comes, she may
be safe from acute pain.
She will stop at [?] on her
way. To think of Patty
Lords daughter Nellie having engaged.
I have thought of her
only as a child. Walter
Sherman is the happy man
All pretty well in 58th st
excepting aunt Rachel, who is
recovering from an attack of [?], which is new
to [underlined] her [/underlined]. Wilson has just done himself much credit
in his second report of Infant Asylum. The late
Ball was a great success and all write in pronouncing
it the most elegant of the season
James & Lucy Homer & Hannah Monse are coming
to dinner, it is after five, and must lay
aside the pen, so goodbye for this day.
Feb 10th They came and were very agreeable, had
a game of cards & general conversation. I am
on my second pair of garters, before thy letter,
I had one pair white as the driven snow, awaiting
their arrival. Julia has recovered from her
[?], and is in good spirits. I have just received
a card for a Kettle [dresser?] at Mrs [?] [Grimes?]
on 6th day & am sorry as it may suggest
a means of raising money for the Diet Kitchen
Home just received by mail, official notice
to go to Albany to ask for 45,000 for Infant Asylum
and I expect to get a goodly amount for the
Home. It is in progress and prominent Senators
say, if we will go, the money will come. Thy
father thinks I have a deal of assurance, while
I think it is conferring a privately to give
to worthy Protestant Churches. Mrs Van Anken
is my associate member. I shall settle all
preliminaries, and hope we go in person
late as March. [?] yet
April 18th seems very near and is pleasant
to think of, but the anxious day will be
from that date, to thy arrival and
