S. C. Armstrong was the principal of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia. Written to Martha Schofield in response to several letters she wrote describing the social conditions of African Americans in South Carolina which were published in the N.Y. Tribune. Thanks her for what she wrote and invites her to visit his school.
