Major William Stone was a Union Army officer, Freedman's Bureau agent, and later served as Attorney General of South Carolina. He also married Martha Schofield's friend and co-teacher in Aiken, Mary Taylor Stone. He is very sad over the death of his nephew Lawrence Corbin. He writes that he talked to Major Edward Deane, who told him that he will most likely be able to have a schoolhouse built on Schofield's lot of land. He adds that he will be glad to be of any further assistance to Schofield regarding the matter.
