Major William Stone was a Union Army officer, Freedman's Bureau agent, and later served as Attorney General of South Carolina. He also married Martha Schofield's friend and co-teacher in Aiken, Mary Taylor Stone. He is glad that Schofield knows about his engagement to Mary Taylor and says he must "claim her" before she can work another year at the Schofield School. He also discusses the weather and shares his thoughts about Quakerism.
