Edward P. Wilson was a soldier during the Civil War. He had been a childhood acquaintance of Martha Schofield's, and during the war they became friends and confidants. He thanks Schofield for being a caring friend and says she has inspired him to make a good name for himself. He alludes to a shameful secret and says that only Schofield and one person other know it.
