Martha Schofield met Sadie Brouwer in 1859 while teaching at a school in Harrison, New York, and the two remained close friends. Brouwer discusses her recent social activities, describes a sermon she heard Henry Ward Beecher give, and mentions a sick child and Lincoln's second inauguration. The letter is signed "thy loving 'wife,'" and in several places Brouwer refers to Schofield as her husband.
