Lucretia Mott letter to Martha Mott Lord; Charles Cavender letter to Lucretia Mott
Pages scanned in reading order. Written from Roadside. Lucretia Mott writes that Joshua Hallowell has died and shares her concern for his family. She tells of news concerning family of friends and mentions circulation of correspondence. She discusses her sister Martha Wright's comments on "the cruelty of punishing children for their childish faults," noting that she is "losing ground in [her] advocacy of government by love alone" as a result of the "obstreperous children," seemingly referring to her great-grandchildren. She also notes that "the comments on the Woodhull and Beecher scandal are very good," saying she agrees with "her," perhaps referring to Victoria Claflin Woodhull. She spoke with a Universalist minister who said that "Mrs. Woodhull's mind was not clean and that she thought Tilton has put some of that scandal into her head" (Woodhull had been arrested the year prior after publishing an article in "Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly" alleging an adulterous affair between Henry Ward Beecher and Elizabeth Tilton, wife of Theodore Tilton). Partially written over a letter dated June 16, 1972 from Mott's grandson Charles Cavender; he asks Mott to send him twenty dollars.
