Martha Schofield expresses deep gratitude for the gifts Lucretia Mott sent her, which she will use to "cheer the weary hearts who are still bearing the burden of recent sorrows." She calls Lucretia a beacon of light "in these dark days when in a state surrounded by the shadows of our nation's sins" and praises her labors in working towards freeing slaves. She discusses the horrible treatment of black people in the South and mentions the Hamburg Massacre and her fear the Governor Chamberlain will be defeated in the upcoming election. She also discusses her school, the Schofield Normal and Industrial School.
