My Dear Lella,
Your very nice
letter was duly received. I enclose
the Bill receipted, which you are at liberty
to correct if you choose.

I return "The Lottery Case," with
the long quotation struck out, and
comments. I think it very good, and
so does my Secretary, because the newspapers
here are all doing pretty much
the same thing now. Use it or not as you
think best. If you conclude to use it, you
can probably strike out more of it. It
was virtually won nn Appeal.

I have written out the Comment
of Attorney [George Pratt?] on the Cherokee
case & of Dr. [Thomas V. Hammond?]
on the Mary Gage case. I send a
Happy New Year to you, and all the
family. Think I left a little blue & white
lace collar which you can send in a
