Belva Lockwood letter to Lella Gardner
Written on "American Woman's Republic" stationery. Lella Crum Gardner (1873-1956) was the wife of Belva Lockwood's nephew Frank Gardner. Discusses in depth the biography that Gardner is writing about her; is sending Gardner materials for her to use as sources, including engraved portraits. Describes the circus she recently attended. Discusses joining the Daughters of the American Revolution, and mentions her membership in The National Council of Women, the A.A.W., and the Medical Association. Also mentions her participation in the Federation of Women's Clubs, the International Law Congress, women's suffrage meetings, the Pageant organized by organized by the National Woman Suffrage Committee, the Inauguration, and the woman suffrage march to the Capitol. Will be representing the Woman's Republic as an ambassador, dean of the party, attorney general, and one of the cabinet of officers on a tour of Europe, writing, "I expect this to be the crowning glory of my old age." Reports on the unveiling ceremony, press coverage, and residence of her portrait (possibly referring to the oil painting by Nellie Mathes Horne (1870-1950) which now resides in the National Portrait Gallery). Also discusses her finances.
