The New York Association of Friends for the Relief of Those Held in Slavery, and the Improvement of the Free People of Color, was organized by individual Friends in New York City in 1839. The first meeting was held 6mo 1st in the Rose Street Meeting House, and subsequently the group met in Friends' homes. Thirty-six members are listed in 1840, including Isaac T. Hopper, James Gibbons and Charles Marriott.
