of the Riviera Leave Area
Issued as a GUIDE & SOUVENIR by the A. E.F.Y. M. C.A. at Nice
M2.
WHAT CAESAR DIDN'T SEE
When Caesar brought his legions
over the Alps he saw some wonderful
country and doubtless appreciated
the future possibilities of the Riviera.
He located at Cimiez, — at least
the Roman army did — and extended
their front line down towards Nice ;
then they cleaned out the machine
gun nests above the city and captur-
ed the town even more ee
than has the A.E.F.
But many things which we're en-
joying, the poor Romans had to miss.
The wonderful Casinos along the
shore at Cannes, Nice, Monte-Carlo
and Menton ; the wonderful buildings
and gardens of Monte-Carlo and the
luxurious — hotels and JOR
shops.
They did have La Tarbie, it’s true,
and they were good enough to leave
its ruins and those at Cimiez for us
to climb ‘over. They did have the
wonderful views from the Grande
Corniche Road and the majestic
mountains. But they had to build
the road first and the mountains were
in their way when they wanted to
invade France.
When you're touring around this
section,
ing that this ground is richly histo-
rical. At has been the scene of many
changes in ownership and govern-
ment down thro centuries, until
finally it became part of France —
the department of the cae Mariti-
mes, of today.

HOW NICE GOT ON THE MAP
Somewhere around 400 B.C. a party
of colonists from Marseille landed
near the mouth of the Var to pray a
new city.
They probably had been struck
with the beauty of this section and
its mild climate. oo
As the railroad line was not run-
ning they came by water.
The natives let them land but later
declared war on them. This was the
last of the natives and Nice grew up_
large and prosperous.
It allied itself with Rome although
it maintained its own TUBERS ARE
government.
Nice was annexed to France in 1860
and: still be’ongs to that country’
though, judging by the khaki crowd
on the streets, you might think it was
a suburb of the U.S.A.

men and no taxes — pretty soft place
to live in these days. _

interest. Be sure to see also the
beautiful gardens surrounding the
Casino.

"WHY LA TURBIE WAS BUILT
When a touring party headed by
Augustus-Caesar (A.D.13) came over
the Grande Corniche Road they deci-
ded the mountains weren’t high
enough at a little village above Monte-
Carlo and proceeded to put.up a
tower. :
At least, that’s what the oldest
inhabitant tells us, and to prove it
the ruins of the tower stil exist.
La Turbie is reached by funicular
railway starting at the "Y” in eee

that on the island of Ste- -Marguerite is

The other island, St-Honorat, has a
chateau built in the 11th century and
a monastery whose founder St-Hono-
