Letter from M. Carey Thomas to Mary Elizabeth Garrett, November 24, 1889

Dear Mary, I enclose a letter from our dear little Jack in the Box. Her cover is off again and her spring as strong as ever. Please for the sake of the charm in tender green and childish faith and consuming enthusiasm let me know at once so that I may write to the child what you told her when you wrote. How long did you say she might stay--what about the GÇ£toysGÇ¥ and the GÇ£booksGÇ¥? Did you send her a GÇ£plan of the gymnasium?GÇ¥ Of course she must wait about the apparatus do you not think so? Before you finally order I want to tell you exactly what Carnefadd says to these pieces Dr. Hurd and the first time we can I want you to let me go with you to Dr. HallGÇÖs gym in Baltimore to see the Zanders she has in use. I understand they have some pieces have they not? Considering that in that Frankfurt gymnasium Dr. Hurd so admired they have 2 doctors two assistants and eight little girls tearing about the whole time to assist patients, Jacks little hands will be full with 70 different children seated in pieces of apparatus that move with unnatural mechanical springs, will they not? Yours, MCT Sunday afternoon B.M.S. Notes Enclosed letter, postal and Zanda circular. Have written friendly noncommittal letter to Dr. Hurd. Can see you on Thursday for a little while at 3 P.M. or I could lunch with you and see you immediately after lunch if 3 does not suit you. Also let me know whether if I could do it you could ask me to dine with you and spend the evening. Either Friday or Saturday. You need not mind saying that you have engagements as it is important not that I could do so I should have to see first what FatherGÇÖs were etc., only if he were to be out I should rather see you then as already between ZoeGÇÖs and BessieGÇÖs tea and Mrs. C. so much of Peabody time is taken up Friday and Saturday. There are several pits I must look up their which will take much time. A word sent to 1728 sometime Wednesday will do. Also send Miss YoungGÇÖs histories that Miss Locke thinks of discarding and the historical [illegible] if you have them. I can look them over after I go upstairs on Wednesday.
