Dearest Minnie, Your little visit here seems quite far away and yet I have not sent you anything worthy of the name of a letter yet. The reason being, confidentially, that I have not been very well. My back, as I think I wrote, ached a great deal for some time and I have been having headaches too, so that when I have not been with Papa, I have been extremely lazy. This week I have felt rather better than last, having gone back to my old friend cod liver oil and am very decidedly on the mend again. Gertrude came down Wednesday evening and stayed till Friday morning and that evening Robert and Mary arrived to stay until tomorrow morning, so you can see that I have not had much leisure lately. Papa also stays up much longer now in the afternoon and we take a short drive every afternoon in addition to our long morning one. The [illegible] is in full bloom now, but I am sorry I have not taken long walks in search of it, owing to these reasons, but hope soon to begin. Tomorrow evening Julia is coming and I have no doubt we shall manage some walking. The willows are showing that lovely tender green, the maples are getting redder every day and there are a good many birds in the woods, and the air is so soft that it is impossible to doubt that the spring is really here at last; but like my father, I feel a longing for the sea and I should not be very much surprised if we moved on after a while. Here we are just near enough for it to be extremely aggravating, as it is quite possible to get to it, but not possible for us until Papa is stronger. 21st I got up early this morning thinking I was going to accomplish something before Papa was ready but only succeeded in getting through a note to Mamie. I did what you asked, as I should be extremely sorry to have her think I had been intentionally rude and am sorry that she should have thought I had been so even unintentionally. This must be the end if I am going to catch the mail. In default of anything interesting in itself, it can carry at any rate a great deal of love and a bon voyage. Hoping to hear something about it all and yourself soon, Lovingly yours, Mary E.G.

Mary Garrett writes to M. Carey Thomas, apologizing for not writing more, blaming her poor health. She writes of the coming of Spring, and states that she and her father will likely want to visit the ocean in the future, if Mr. Garrett's health allows. She also mentions writing to Mamie Gwinn to apologize for coming across as rude, as requested by Thomas.
