Letter from M. Carey Thomas to Mary Elizabeth Garrett, July 11, 1890

Dearest Mary, How about promises - where are you letters. How about telling your fellow medical schemers the success of the subscription etc etc. Well I know you too well to suppose you would write, so I broke my promise too. I was so tired that I wanted to forget things occidental but now that presumably you have reached the other side, will you not at once send me your address. Remember I do not know your bankers and there are one or two questions I must have answered even if you do not wish to receive friendly communications. Various things have detained us in London and we shall be here for a few days longer, and busy as I am I think I can find time to come to see you - and Mamie surely would have time. We are camping out in Aunt HannahGÇÖs town house. They are all down at their country place and I have talked to Gladstone and John Morley and we are to meet Furneval [?] and Austin Dobson tomorrow and the day after my admiration the great socialist Sidney Webb, so our days have been not wholly books. Nevertheless though you are neither a book nor a celebrity I should very much like to see you. I trust you are not too tired to get rested. Do stay at the new hotel The Savoy; it makes all the difference to look out, as we look out, on the Thames. Our balcony overhanging the river is Venetian and Parisian, and unLondonlike [sic].
