Dearest Minnie, I am so sorry you did not receive the cheque in time after all. It has not come back to me, so probably she made a mistake and forwarded it home to you. You see since leaving Aix my movements have been dependent on those of others, and as neither Alice nor Miss Fulton are strong, plans were by no means always carried out and I found it difficult to get my mail regularly. As soon as I could get at my trunk after getting here I sent you by cable the St. Louis names you asked for. I was surprised at your asking again Mrs. Lackland had been written to, as I felt sure I had written you that I thought you had asked me not to do anything about St. Louis without being sure that Mrs. L. had been heard from. In writing Mrs. Lippincott, from Deer Park, (as I understood either she or Mrs. Wister had written her) I asked about it, (as I think I wrote you also), and to this day I have no reply from Mrs. Lippincott. As Miss Child told me she knew Mrs. Filley rather well (at Jamestown, where the FGÇÖs go in summer) and I knew her not at all, I got Miss C. to write her, and she has never had any answer. She wrote in such a way that it would have done no harm if Mrs. L. had heard of it. I hope you will succeed in getting the Chicago Committee organized and [illegible] work and I hope Mrs. Furness will work with them. Madison and Milwaukee I enclose Mrs. SheldonGÇÖs letters re: Madison and Milwaukee and have acknowledged the 2nd one, asking her to advise you instead of me (as you, my colleague are now at home) in regard to progress. She was asked before to keep Mrs. Benne, as Printing Com. advised, of names. Detroit The enclosed letter of Miss Newberry is from Mrs. McMillan who has subscribed $257.00 of the Washington Com. (wife of Senator McMillan, [illegible] rich, and who has given over $100,000 in Detroit). I asked Mrs. Blune to forward Mrs. Newberry [illegible] documents or ask her if she wanted them, after the receipt of her sub. Of $250.00 which was her response to Mrs. McMillanGÇÖs letter and you can find out from Mrs. B. whether it is worthwhile to follow it up and get them to establish a committee out there. I think Mrs. McMillan might possibly take more interest if she were asked to herself head a committee out there and that she might perhaps be more inclined to lead off there with a large additional subscription, when it would be credited to Michigan and not to Washington. It would be worth your while to try to see her and talk to her. She was very nice when I saw her, and perhaps your GÇ£personal maquetismoGÇ¥ excuse the expression, but I am in earnest, might stir her enthusiasm when I could only rouse her interest.
