Dearest Minnie, Of course Mamie has told you of Dr. OslerGÇÖs unqualified utterances on the subject of women physicians and of his opinion as to their admission to the Hospital and the Medical School. He says (as quoted by both Julia and Bessie) that he has always had an interest in the education of women and particularly in their medical education, that he wishes to help to turn out good women physicians, the need for whom he appreciates more every day, that he has lectured with them both in London and in Philadelphia and shall lecture with them here and that he is anxious (not merely willing) to have some women among the interns. Mamie, Bessie also said, did not approve of his attitude or his open expression of his opinions, but I was delighted to hear of it. Please find out as soon as you can about the people. I have been too tired or too busy since getting back to write the promised letters to Drs. Hall and Hartwell, but will try to do so soon. Tomorrow I expect to take another holiday and go to Mount Vernon for the day with the McLanes and on Sunday I get off for my other trip which will not be exactly a holiday. I hope you are less tired. I saw Bessie this morning and found her wretchedly blue, poor child, and dreading the possibility of another attack of pneumonia. I hope Dr. Osler will be able to cheer her up a little when he makes his examination this afternoon. She said she hardly thought now that she would be able to go to Bryn Mawr at all, but would go even if only to stay one day if she got well enough. ChristineGÇÖs note was of course not a surprise to me. Have you any suggestion to make for Clark? I should like to see a copy of your reply to her letter, if you donGÇÖt mind sending it on. What did you think of the other letter? I stopped at the Hospital this morning to see about the details of plaster finish and was met at the door by Mr. Gilman, who was very polite and nice, offering to stay and go with me himself, which I naturally declined. He was still looking ill, I thought. Try to take a little time to write me. Lovingly yours, Mary E. G.
