Women working during World War I
(a) French women deliver the mail. (b) English women fill positions vacated by men fighting abroad. English woman who is serving as village blacksmith, repairing farm implements, and doing other jobs that fall to the lot of the knight of the forge. This resourceful lady has two brothers in the British Army, one a major-farrier, the other a sergeant-farrier. Her father is dead and as there is no one else to keep the fires burning she took over the shop and can now wield the hammer with strength and precision. Besides being a good horse-shoer, she can repair nearly any agricultural machine used on neighboring farms, 2/15/1917 (c) Elephants from zoo do farm work in Surrey.
