Judgment by Jehans Keuresis, Provost of St. Quentin in a dispute between the procurer of the Abbot of the Monastery and Church of St. Vincent de Laon, and the Dean, priests of the commonalty of Venduel concerning the seizin of a piece of land called Pierre as Courcelles between Avesques and Clastre. Gothic hand. Dark Brown ink. Text on the recto begins with a 4-line decorative capital "A." Top left corner has the date "8 [Febru?] 1324" in a second hand. Additional writing in a third hand is in the left margin. Bottom of the page is folded up (over 2 cm) and contains 7 evenly spaced words in the same hand as the principal text. The verso has "Phillips MS 36601" and a couple of words in various hands. At the bottom, 3 lines of ruled French text in Gothic hand (not the same hand as that of the principal text) appear in light brown ink. Blind ruling. [Other proper names in the document : Johans Guillaumes, Johnas de Camak(?), Robers(?) Baudin(?), Jehan Sohier(?), Pierre Cemie(?).]

Description:
Scrapbook of letters written by Frances Arnold, Bryn Mawr College class of 1897, to her mother, father, cousin, and "Minge, an unknown correspondent who is presumed to be family. The letters detail her time at Bryn Mawr College, her experience at French finishing school, and her life travelling in in France, Germany, and Italy. There are a few incoming letters, but the vast majority were composed by Frances herself. The letters begin with an account of the death of Dr. Rhoads. Arnold chronicles her study patterns, friendships, and family gossip.

Legal document issued by Louis XIV. Cursive. Brown ink. The letters in the first line of the document are twice as large as those in the rest of the document. Above the first line is a segment of unintelligible text. A line that zigzags horizontally marks the end of the text. Below it, Charleroi is rather clearly written, but the text directly to the right of it is not. Two undecipherable signatures are below this line. Verso of the document contains a circular, black ink stamped seal containing Louis XIV's coat of arms, which contains a triple fleur-de-lis (a stylized lily) with a crown on top. The coat of arms is surrounded by text. In the area between the text and the edge of the seal are crosses and at least one figure of a baby or cherub on the left. Another figure likely is on the right side. An undecipherable word stands to the left of the stamp, and "Chanceller..." stands to the right of it. The parchment is nearly transparent in some areas.

Book of Hours Laudate Dominum (or Cantate Domino). Gothic textura quadrata. Black ink. Sentences begin on the left side and have a 1.5-line long capital colored with gold leaf, surrounded by blue and/or white ink and gold leaf. These capitals are filled in with a combination of white and blue ink or white ink and gold leaf. The blank space, created by lines ending before the right margin, are filled with decorative bars, colored by blue and white ink and gold leaf. The text, centered on the page, is surrounded on the top, left, and right sides by a decorative outline in blue and white ink and gold leaf. Exterior of the outline is filled with vines (in black ink) and leaves (in gold leaf). The vine decoration enters the gap at the bottom of the outline and reaches up to the final line of the text. Text is wrapped without hyphenation. Blind ruling.

Numbers in the right margin. The verso contains some writing: "Philips 32167, a rather modern summary of the document in brown ink, 8? Liasse/ 4? Dossier, and a line of writing in Gothic bastard hand at the top.
