Single Leaf Manuscripts

Missal with Acts 9:17ff. Gothic hand. Black ink. A simple 6-line decorative line appears in the left margin on the recto and verso. A 2-line initial "H" begins a paragraph on the recto. Some writing occurs in red ink: "In purificatione" is in red ink near the capital "H" on the recto, and four other words including "Pauli" appear in red ink on the verso. Brown ink ruling.

Manuscript. Dark brown ink with rubrics. 2 columns. Writing on both sides. 2 of the 8 columns contain decorative section dividers in red and brown ink.

Papal bull issued by Sixtus V regarding the promotion of Juliocesar Reatin(?) to the office of Secretariatus. Fine Gothic hand. Brown ink. The top margin of the document is filled with 3 to 7-line long decorative capitals which begin the words contained in the first line of the document. The top left corner contains an elaborate capital "S", which begins the word "Sixtus". Below the last line of the text are a number of signatures: P. Arans and P. Pultrius (left); J. Alicarado and J. Crudillis (lower left); O. (?)Barupalicu, C. Pampsilius, and A. di Mae...(?) (middle). Bottom of the document is folded up and sealed. The folded up portion contains "J. Bucca" in decorative letters. The right half of the verso contains a large capital "R". "Jo:" appears in the top half of the "R" and "Bij/zel" appears in the he bottom half of the R. Signatures of C. Pampsilius and A. Cata...(?) appear on the verso. Blind ruling. Prickings in the left and right margins. Document is sealed by means of a lead bulla and knotted twine. The bulla contains a cross followed by "Sixtus/Papa/V". The back of the bulla contains "PPAE" above a cross, sandwiched by the faces of the Saints Peter and Paul. The left face is nearly cut off.

Legal Document. Indenture for a messuage or tenement between William Fflindall(?) and his wife Barbara (on the one part) and James Gunnoni. Document begins with "This Indenture" printed in large black letters. Elaborate black ink decoration (printed?) fills the top left corner. Manuscript is cursive in dark brown or black ink. Throughout the document, words and phrases such as "And the said" and "Which" are bolder and larger than the rest of the text. Wide left margin. Bottom of the parchment is folded up and sealed with a red wax seal on top of two obelisk-shaped strips of parchment. Seal contains a 5-pointed star on top of a rosette. The signature of James Gunnoni appears by the seal. Verso contains witnesses' signatures as well of a summary of the document, above which is written "Expired." Knife prickings on the left edge of the page. Metal point ruling. Top edge of the parchment is wavy.

Timothy Renner (1976): Document (Contract?). I-II cent. A.D. Line 3 appears to mention Oxyrhynchus. Verso blank. The top margin remains.

Document. Black ink. Writing and language difficult to decipher. Writing may be in two different hands going two different directions. Writing is separated from the top (or bottom?) margin by a horizontal squiggly line in three pieces. Verso is blank.

Prayers for the early morning. Gothic textura quadrata. Text and musical notes in black ink. Musical staff in red ink. Recto contains a 1.5 line capital "P" in red ink and a 1.5-line capital "T" in blue ink. Verso contains a 1.5-line capital "D" in blue ink. Knife prickings on left edge of the page.

Theology. Theological text (?). Gothic hand. Brown ink. Manuscript is badly faded. One column and a partial second column survive.

Fragment of a page from a hymn book. Illuminated. Illustration of Christ rising from his tomb. Recto of the fragment is an extra large capital "A" that looks like a tree, in brown and white ink. The "A" has gold leaf on its exterior. In the top half of the "A, a wounded Chirst in a white tunic and red cloak rides on a cloud. In his left hand he holds a staff, and he gestures blessings with his right hand. Christ has a gold leaf halo. The background is deep blue with outlines in white. Heads and gold leaf halos of two angels begin just above the horizontal stroke of the A." They wear white tunics. The angel on the viewer's left prays; the angel on the right looks down at her right hand, while her left hand rests in her lap. The two angels sit on a tan and brown ink tomb, set against a deep blue background. On the floor in front of them, two soldiers in blue and grey armor lie on the ground asleep. Verso contains lyrics and musical notes in black ink. Only one whole word survives; 2-3 other partial words remain. Musical staff in red ink.

Letter signed by Henry IV of France, written to the general of the papal forces at Conti d'Avignon thanking him for his continued service and dedication. Cursive. Brown ink. The page has a wide left margin, and the text runs to the right edge of the page. Centered just below the last line of text is the signature of Henry IV of France "Henry." At the bottom right of the page is an unintelligible signature. While the recto of the page appears to be seamless, the verso looks as if three pieces of paper have been attached to one another. The top part includes the body of the letter and signature of Henry. The middle section is blank on the recto, but on the verso contains a summary of the letter and perhaps the remains of a seal. The third portion contains the aforementioned unintelligible signature on the recto. French transcription and English translation of the document are available.
