Native Americans and Quakers, 1791-1815

Halliday Jackson documented his time living with the Seneca Indians, which lasted over two years. Following an account of the latter part of his stay, Jackson documents his route returning home. The last part of this journal is a record of an encounter between the Chiefs of the Six Nations and a missionary from Massachusetts, who hoped to preach to them. A speech by Chief Red Jacket is recorded, in which he opposes Christian evangelism, and another in which he opposes selling land.

This journal is an account of William Hartshorne's journey to attend treaty negotiations between the government and Indians held at Sandusky, Ohio. He was part of a delegation of Friends appointed by the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, a group which included Quaker minister, William Savery, who also kept a journal of the trip. Hartshorne kept a daily account of his impressions of his encounters with Indians, government representatives, and the treaty situation.

This volume contains contemporary copies of correspondence between the Committee on Indian Affairs of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the Friends living in the Seneca Nation, of whom Halliday Jackson was one, along with Henry Simmons and Joel Swayne.
