Thousands of images of Friends’ meeting houses have been brought together digitally in this online collection. Photographs from both the Quaker Collection of Haverford College and Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College are available here. The majority of these images come from within Philadelphia and New York Yearly Meetings, but also include pictures from across the United States and abroad.

Description:
Building dated 1819. New York Monthly Meeting: Exterior. The Hester Street Meeting House was built in 1819. At the time of the schism, in 1828, Hicksite Friends retained the Hester Street meeting house. In 1861, they moved into Rutherford Place. The Hester Street meeting house is no longer actively used by Friends.

Building dated 1890. Jericho Friends Meeting: Exterior. Friends at Bethpage Preparative Meeting were granted permission to worship by the quarterly meeting in 12mo 1697/8. In 1743/4, Westbury Monthly Meeting accepted a transfer of the Bethpage Quaker meeting house from private ownership. Bethpage Preparative Meeting became part of Jericho Monthly Meeting on its establishment in 1789. This meeting house was built in 1890 and was moved across the road in 1936 on the creation of Bethpage State Park.

Building dated 1890. Jericho Friends Meeting: Interior. Friends at Bethpage Preparative Meeting were granted permission to worship by the quarterly meeting in 12mo 1697/8. In 1743/4, Westbury Monthly Meeting accepted a transfer of the Bethpage Quaker meeting house from private ownership. Bethpage Preparative Meeting became part of Jericho Monthly Meeting on its establishment in 1789. Building dated 1787. Jericho Monthly Meeting: Exterior. This building was first erected in 1689, and Quakers in the hamlet of Jericho essentially rebuilt this meeting house in 1787. Jericho monthly meeting began assembling inside when it was established in 1789. Elias Hicks had a special attachment to this meeting, and this meeting house is still actively used by the Jericho Monthly Meeting.

Building dated 1694-1714. Flushing Friends Meeting: Exterior. The first recorded friends meeting at Flushing was held in 1694. Its first meeting house was built in the same year, and the first New York Yearly Meeting was held there in 1696, and continued to meet there until it moved to New York City. The meeting house was expanded to its present size in 1714, and is still active for the Flushing Monthly meeting.

Description:
Building dated 1800-1860. Greenfield Friends Meeting: Exterior. Milton Monthly Meeting was reportedly established in 1818, being set off from Galway Monthly Meeting. The Orthodox branch of Milton Monthly reunited with Galway Monthly (Orthodox), calling the reunited body Greenfield Monthly. This meeting was laid down in 1855, members attached to Moreau Monthly Meeting on its establishment in 1856. However, the meeting was laid down in 1865. From the Elizabeth B. Conrow Collection.

Gasport Meeting House

Description:
Building dated 1818. Hartland Friends Meeting: Exterior. Hartland Monthly Meeting was established in 1821 under Farmington Quarterly Meeting. This meeting at first included the preparative meetings of Elba, Royalton, and Hartland. The Hicksite branch of Hartland Monthly Meeting was laid down in 1829. The Orthodox branch further divided in 1855 when the Wilburites (Conservatives) held a separate meeting; many of the Wilburites were reinstated in 1896. After 1905 the meeting was held alternately between Hartland and Gasport. The monthly meeting was eventually held exclusively at Gasport, but it retained the name of Hartland Monthly Meeting. This meeting house was built in 1818.

Hector Meeting House

Description:
Building dated 1903. Hector Friends Meeting: Exterior. Hector Monthly Meeting was established in 1822 by Farmington Quarter. After the Separation of 1828 there was another Separation, in the Orthodox meeting, resulting in an Orthodox (Gurneyite) and Conservative (Wilburite) branches. In 1859, another split occurred within the Conservative branch, yielding Kingite and Otisite meetings. These meetings reunited as Conservative in 1881, and ceased to meet after 1955. The Orthodox (Gurneyite) branch of Hector Monthly changed its name to Perry City in 1901; this meeting remains active. This meeting house was erected in 1903.

Building dated 1876. Glens Falls Meeting: Exterior. Queensbury Monthly Meeting was established in 1800, set off from Easton Monthly Meeting. It was a part of Easton Quarterly Meeting until Saratoga Quarterly was established in 1815. The Hicksite branch was laid down in 1863, members attached to Saratoga Monthly. The Orthodox branch changed its name to Glens Falls Monthly in 1877. It was laid down in 1973. This meeting house was erected in 1876 for the Orthodox Meeting.

Building dated 1838. Catskill Friends Meeting: Interior. Plains Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) was reportedly established in 1813, set off from Malborough Monthly Meeting. In 1864 its name was changed to Greenfield and Neversink Monthly Meeting (Hicksite). In 1880 it adopted a joint session and later was recognized as an executive meeting. In 1975 the name was changed to Catskill Monthly Meeting. This meeting house was built in 1838. This meeting remains active. This is an image of the interior.

Description:
Building dated 1828-1840. Granville Friends Meeting: Exterior. Danby Monthly Meeting was established in 1795, set off from Saratoga (Easton) Monthly. It was a part of Saratoga (later Easton) Quarterly Meeting until Ferrisburg Quarterly was established in 1810, and was set off to Easton Quarterly in 1816. The Orthodox branch of Danby Monthly changed its name to Granville Monthly in 1839; it was laid down in 1857 and members were attached to Queensbury Monthly.

Building dated 1827. Jericho Monthly Meeting: Exterior. Jericho Monthly Meeting was established in 1789, set off from Westbury Monthly under Westbury Quarter. The Hicksite branch of the meeting remains active to date. The Orthodox branch was reportedly laid down in 8mo 1828, and its members were attached to Westbury, to be called Westbury and Jericho Monthly Meeting. This meeting house was built in 1827, and used until 1884 by the Hicksite Meeting, when they switched back to the Jericho Meeting House. This meeting house is no longer used actively by Friends. Friends met for worship in Rockland County at Kakiat in the early 19th century under the care of Cornwall Monthly Meeting, but the meeting there was discontinued by mid-century. The meeting was revived in 1934, and became Rockland Friends Meeting in 1948. It was established as a monthly meeting in 1950, and is currently active

Building dated 1973. Fredonia Monthly Meeting: Exterior. Fredonia Monthly meeting was established in 1963. They bought their meeting house, previously called Grange hall, in 1973, but sold it in 1988 due to rising costs. The meeting is still active. This is from the E. Z. Palmer collection.

Building dated 1812. Galen Preparative Meeting: Exterior. Galen Preparative Meeting was reportedly established in 1814 under Farmington Monthly Meeting, and was set off to Junius Monthly Meeting on its establishment in 1815. In 1863, the meeting was laid down along with Junius Monthly Meeting. It was reestablished in 1870 but laid down again shortly after 1883.
