Association for the Care of Colored Orphans admission papers
Description
Admission papers indicating the child(ren) being surrendered to the Association, their age at surrender, the date of surrender, and who surrendered them. Many of the papers include additional information about the child(ren), primarily notes from doctors who examined them and the addresses of those who surrendered them. Pages 41v, 50, and 57a describe children as "contraband," a term used during the Civil War to refer to formerly enslaved people who had escaped to Union lines.
