Consists primarily of financial records. Also contains journal entries, lists of students Howland taught, records of supplies she received, and other occasional miscellany, including reports to military officers about her teaching and notes from her medical studies. Most of the contents date from Howland's time working with freedmen in the 1860s, but some parts are later; the financial records in particular often last into the 1870s, with a few reaching into the 1890s. The book was often written in upside down and from back to front. Therefore, in this digital facsimile some pages are presented upside down and should be read from the back of the volume to the front.
