Written to abolitionist and educator Caroline F. Putnam by her former student Novella M. Nelson. Discusses arrangements to have a mattress and "springs" made for Putnam by a craftsman in Washington and shipped to her home in Lottsburg, Virginia. Passes on news of Nelson and some friends, including a woman who had fled from the Northern Neck to Point Lookout, Maryland, to escape her enslaver.
