Fragment, likely written from Fort Morton in Arlington, Virginia, in June or July 1866. Discusses Howland's work with freedmen, many of whom had insufficient food. Mentions a plan to visit Harpers Ferry with Mary Reed and M. Wilson. Discusses the prospect of buying land at the urging of Lewis Carter and "Uncle Moses"; says that "it would be a permanent benefit where one's purposes could carried to something like completeness."
