Written to Howland's sister-in-law, who was vacationing in Israel. Discusses Howland's views on "the Holy Land" and her wish that biblical prophets offered better descriptions of the local flora. Expresses antipathy for Quaker meetings, saying Howland would always think of Palestine "as a doleful place for penance, to furnish texts for droning preachers that had no message beyond a demand for the patient endurance of the young listener." Passes on news of friends Howland spent time with in Philadelphia, her neighbors in Sherwood, and describes funerals she attended. Discusses saving for old age without overworking oneself, temperance, and Hannah's son Herbert Howland. Also describes a "religious visit" Howland received from Chauncey Thorne.
