Journal used for various purposes, primarily related to Howland's work at the Normal School for Colored Girls (Miner Normal School). Includes lists of students, sermons/essays addressed to students, poetry, Freedman Box accounts, recipes, and various miscellaneous lists. Multiple pages have also been used for handwriting practice. Much of the text written in pencil has faded and is difficult to read. The journal was sometimes written in upside down and from back to front. Therefore, in this digital facsimile some of the contents are written upside down and should be read from the back of the volume to the front.
