Gibbons and Stearns met during the Civil War while working at an army hospital in Point Lookout, Maryland. Stearns relays news from abolitionist Hannah Stevenson about the opening of a freedman's school in Richmond, Virginia, and the attitude of the those in the city. He also discusses the politics around the end of the war.
