Cornelius W. Harris was a free African American born in New Jersey who served in the 20th U.S. Colored Infantry during the Civil War. Written to Miss Vaile [sp] from Camp Parapet, Louisiana. Says that his Company is the best drilled in the Regiment. Describes the court martial and execution of an African American private from Philadelphia who shot and killed one of the sergeants. Sends his respects to the Vaile [sp] family and says "tell the Boys [they need] not wish to be a Soldier, but stay where they have plenty to Eate, good Beds to Sleep when it comes night."
