Boston Oct 30/67
My dear Julia
I hope this
day is remembered as Lucy's
Birth Day, and that the
gift selected is in a real
substantial dress, and in
her [?], having no
doubt of its [promise?] of interest
and perhaps profitable
in her daily work
The Barnards, Mr B,
called according to appointment
at 1/2 past 11 yesterday. I
accompanied him to visit
a model Hospital. [underlined] There [/underlined]
and in charge of a miss Robin
I will speak of it when I see
you all. Know it, I went
[left side]
to their humor for the day, and
a perfectly agreeable day it was
I was fresh, rested and kept in
mind what my children would
expect of me in the way of deportment.
Dr Walker & wife
came to dinner and Prof Pierce
the younger & Mrs Parsons. If
you are not very active in
every question of the present
day, men to the woman vote
you will be [scarcely?] believed
the [underlined] young man [/underlined] of the age
He says he does not [underlined] want [/underlined]
the woman vote, but he
knows it will come, and
he cannot see why, if men
ask for universal suffrage
it does not mean women too
you should hear him, and
know where you stand
[right side]
In the evening Prof Price the
elder appeared [James Walker?]
Mr Cheney, Anna Hisks
may & Alice Parkman Edmond
Emmett Hall & wife, Mrs Gor
Anderson [underlined] Judge Russell [/underlined], and
men so many more, including
the unattractive Julia Ward Howe
I believe I talked with all
until the carriage which I
ordered at 10, delivered me
at 191 [Sharmont Avenue?]
I found my brain called
into action beyond what I
believed to be its power
Delighted in the Barnards
& Mrs Parsons immensely
and only wished for you all,
Next week we are to meet
another company when Sally
will be home too.
Mrs Meirot
made a delightful call
yesterday, and I have provided
to go out for the day
when I return from Salem
at present [?] and her
little girls are with them
Mr Cutler called yesterday,
and invited me to take a
drive to Dia Lewis, and
perhaps I shall. She said
Dia is looked upon as a
humbug, by anti crotchety
people, he proclaims [underlined] that [/underlined
as his wisdom. I was
glad of all the letters, and
was very happy to have anticipated
Mr Carmann on three
pages of fools [?] already
mailed. Thy Mother
