Martin has read the letters that Martha Schofield wrote describing the situations of African Americans in South Carolina which were published in the New York Tribune. He tells Schofield that he is in ill health and was advised by his doctor to move down South, and asks her if she has any employment opportunities for him. He adds that he is a true friend to African American people.
