Lucretia Mott letter to Martha Coffin Wright; L. M. Greene letter to Lucretia Mott
Written from Roadside; possibly a fragment. Lucretia Mott thanks Martha Wright for her letter and gift. She recently spent some time with her daughter Anna Mott Hopper and discusses Anna's health, seeming positive about her improvements. She briefly discusses William Lloyd Garrison. She shares recent news concerning family and friends, with a particular focus on health issues. She asks if Martha has read the recent remarks in the Index "on the Beecher 'scandal' and the cruel treatment of Victoria" (Victoria Claflin Woodhull had been arrested the year prior after publishing an article in "Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly" alleging an adulterous affair between Henry Ward Beecher and Elizabeth Tilton, wife of Theodore Tilton) and admits that she has not answered Claflin's letter to her yet because she does not know "just how." She has read the "literature and dogma" of Matthew Arnold with "so much interest." She writes about some recent dental issues of some family members. Partially written over a letter from L. M. Green to Lucretia Mott enclosing some lines of O. W. Holmes, perhaps referring to Oliver Wendell Holmes. Also partially written over a notice of a meeting of the Pennsylvania Peace Society's executive committee.
