Reprinted from "The Washington Times" Washington, D.C., U.S.A., June 17th, 1914. ASKS U. S. AID TO STOP MASSACRE BY TURKS. MRS. BELVA LOCKWOOD APPEALS TO CONGRESS IN BEHALF OF ARMENIANS. Responding to an appeal to prevent, if possible, an impending Armenian massacre, Mrs. Belva A. Lockwood, American member of the International Peace Bureau of Berne, to-day addressed to the Senate and House Committees on Foreign Relations an urgent request to communicate with the Turkish Government in behalf of the Armenians. The State Department, the American Peace Society and the Turkish Ambassador in Washington will be appealed to by Mrs. Lockwood to prevent bloodshed in the Near East. The activity of Mrs. Lockwood was prompted by a communication received yesterday from Mrs. Diana Agabeg Apcar, of Yokohama, Japan, who said :- "The Turkish Government is at present preparing another Armenian massacre. This fact is an open secret and is confirmed by reports from various sources. "I therefore earnestly pray that the peace bureaus of the world take some measure which might tend to arrest the horrible and atrocious outrage now impending upon the Armenians subject to Turkish domination." "The Armenians are a Christian people" said Mrs. Lockwood, "and it seems a part of the Turkish religion is to murder all who do not subscribe to the Mohammedan doctrines. Because America is so far away from Turkey, I thought it would be difficult to get any interest stirred in behalf of the Armenians, but I will do my best, even if it be feeble efforts, to do all possible to get word to the Turkish Government and urge it to check any hostilities toward the Armenians."
