Hi James and Karen,
On behalf of the Muslim students traversing Haverford this year, we are so fortunate to know that the Astronomy department has our back, particularly when it
comes thinking and looking at the night sky for new moons.
What a huge blessing!
Indeed we are thankful!
While the lunar month of Ramadan ended just a few days ago, the interest to see the moon more often grows. The intensity of the daylight hours for those
abstaining from food and water is undeniable. And thus the nighttime sky becomes more attractive, and more symbolic.
We hope that we can engage and learn more with all of you. We reckon that there is more to spirit us all, across the horizons.
Much gratitude and appreciation to all of you of the Astronomy department!

Great. On the public observing side James (cced) has agreed to be the main point of contact.
Best, Karen.

I am folding in Qaid Hassan, the Muslim student advisor, for his thoughts and responses.
I look forward to imagining what this might look like going forward.
Be well and take care,
Walter

I think an outdoor event with a small enough number of people should be covid safe - we'll just have to see what the campus rules are of course.
Going upstairs might be tricky.... but we have 8" telescopes which can come outside (and binoculars) all of which are really better for Moon
viewing (because of the larger field of view).
If we're stuck online, we might be able to try live streaming. We've been having a go anyway (https://www.youtube.com/channel/
UCFApvVV18HuSS78VLPTbedg), although we haven't yet had a clear night for an event, but we could try for a short event focused on Moon
observing.
I'll pass the request on to the student observers.
Best, Karen.

Hi Karen,
I hope you had a good winter break and are keeping up the spirit, staying warm and dry, and feeling excited about the coming semester.
Great to see Jocelyn so frequently in the news since her residency at Haverford.
I spoke today with Qaid Hassan, our Muslim student advisor and the moving force behind the pre-COVID moon sighting event. He apparently
has a strong foundation of first and second year students this year and is wanting to build on the momentum for the future. He has been so
faithful and hard working and I am glad to see him finally bear fruit.
He asked if there might be a protocol appropriate moon sighting event at the end of Ramadan this year (May 11th or 12th) depending on the
arc of the horizon.
I am not sure what that might look like (mostly outside, masked, only people within the existing campus community, no more than 15, probably
no food) but wondered if it might include one's or two's going up to try to look either by eyeball or telescope from the roof.
Would love your thoughts about that. Hope to be in the small square screen with you sometime soon and in person sometime later.
In friendship,
Walter
