Henry Joel Cadbury sitting in the Deanery Garden at Bryn Mawr College
Dr. Cadbury (1883-1974) who graduated from Haverford College (1903) and Harvard College (Ph.D. 1913) taught classics and Biblical Studies at Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Harvard's Divinity School for many years before becoming a member of the Board of Directors at Bryn Mawr College, and its Chairman in 1956. Here, the Quaker scholar, lecturer, and social activist sits quietly on the Deanery garden's well head amidst the bronze putti purchased by M. Carey Thomas's replicas of decorative fountain figures from Herculaneum's Villa dei Papiri (1st century BCE-79 CE), now housed in the Naples National Archaeological Museum. The Deanery, formerly the residence of Dean, then President M. Carey Thomas, was later used by the Bryn Mawr College Alumnae Association from 1933 until 1968 when the structure, deemed unsafe, was demolished to make way for the construction of Canaday Library. The Deanery garden area which remains, was renamed the Blanca Noel Taft Memorial Garden in 1974.
