Minutes and occasional treasurers' reports of the organization known at different times as the Society for the Free Instruction of African Females, the Society for the Free Instruction of Females of Color, and the Association of Friends for the Free Instruction of Colored Women, which eventually merged with the Association of Friends for the Free Instruction of Adult Colored Persons. The minutes discuss rules for the running of the organization, rules for the teachers and students, and reports on the occurrences at the school. The treasurers' reports detail the organization's income and expenses. The book also lists the names of the organization's members. Records skip 15 years between 1816 and 1831; it is not clear if the organization was active during that time. Blank pages were not scanned.

Robert Corson was Corresponding Secretary for the American Freedman's Union Commission. Encloses a check containing Schofield's salary. He is not sure whether the Association will fund schools in Aiken next year if the locals do not offer some financial support.

Sarah "Sallie" F. Corlies was a friend of Martha Schofield's and was the secretary of the Germantown Freedmen's Aid Association, an important source of funding for Schofield's school in Aiken. Has been too busy to write or visit Darby. Discusses the Penn Sewing School and offers to send Schofield a copy of its charter and by-laws. Gives Schofield credit for the official report from the "Penna. Asso." (possibly the Pennsylvania Freedmen's Relief Association) and asks how many teachers Schofield was assigned. Is interested in hearing about the state of Schofield's school upon her return to Aiken. Reminds her to write, stating the Schofield's letters about her work and school are the main business of the Germantown Association meetings. Reports news about family/friends, including Sarah B. (possibly Sallie R. Bowman)'s enthusiasm about the recent woman's suffrage meeting she and some of Schofield's family members attended. References Lawrence Obanyon Posey and Allen A. Scott, former students of Schofield who were attending Lincoln University.

Edward Magill was a prominent Quaker and president of Swarthmore College who supported Schofield's school for African Americans. Asks him for help soliciting financial support from the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Describes the school's financial situation.

Text is faded. Like Schofield, Philena Heald taught freedmen in South Carolina after the Civil War. Heald describes her school and students, who are "breathless in attention and catch every word we say." She describes in detail the house where she is living, in which rebels once resided. She also describes attending a Black church. She expresses a desire to see Schofield since they are now living so close to each other.

Edna Louise Cohen Nicholson (b.1868) and her husband Alfred W. Nicholson were students of Martha Schofield's in Aiken, South Carolina. Probably addressed to Schofield's niece Mary Ash Jenkins (1875-1948). Written from Bettis Academy (run by Alfred W. Nicholson). Encloses a typed reflection on Martha Schofield that she wrote upon the recipient's request, titled "Reminiscences of Miss Martha Schofield, Founder of Schofield Institute." Recounts her experiences at the Schofield School and Schofield's humanitarian work for African Americans, saying that "she was for the colored people, a lawyer, doctor, and teacher. She taught them to buy homes, visited the jails and courts, and helped to intercede for the poor negro boys who were not treated fairly." Page 6 is a stereogram photo of a tablet presented to Schofield at the opening of the Institute's Carter Hall in 1882.

Mary Schofield Ash Jenkins was the niece of Martha Schofield. She writes about the life and legacy of Martha Schofield, with a focus on her work to educate African Americans. Describes the Schofield School's celebration of Martha Schofield's 100th birthday.

Isaac A. Givens (born roughly 1845) was a carpenter, prominent member of Aiken's black community, and one of the first trustees of the Schofield Normal and Industrial School. His speech, delivered at the opening of a new school building, encourages the students to follow in Martha Schofield's footsteps, so that when she is dead the morals she has taught them may be as lasting a monument to her as the newly erected building. The third page contains text in pencil about the ceremony that very closely resembles Katherine Smedley's description of it in her biography of Martha Schofield.

Martha Schofield writes in detail about a recent party she held where she hosted two local needy families. She also talks about having a surprise visit from two traveling Quakers, David Heston and Daniel B. Price, the latter of whom donated fifty dollars to the school. After they left, a man from Ohio visited the school after hearing about it from Heston. This man told Schofield about a memorable encounter with an older Quaker woman when he was a child which leads Schofield to ponder how much of a lasting impression she has on others. She also mentions that she was glad to hear that cousin R's health seems to be improving.
