Livermore made her first speech for suffrage in May 1869, in Boston. She was the woman who then said, Why don't these brothers of ours call us, the reserves, into action? We could help them. This same cry was echoed by women of all countries in the Great War of 1914-1918. But it was first said by Mrs. Livermore who had been a famous nurse during the Civil War. Mrs. Livermore, who had published the "Agitator" in Chicago, went to Boston in 1870 as one of the editors of the Woman's Journal, with Lucy Stone and Henry Blackwell. Assitant editors were Julia Ward Howe, William Lloyd Garrison, and Colonel Thomas Wentworth Higginson. One of Mrs. Livermore's greatest tasks was her report of the sanitary work done by women in the war. Through their patriotic services to the soldiary in the Civil War the United States first realized women's talent for administering great enterprises. (c) Unidentified group portrait. Partial draft of a letter written by Martha Schofield that was printed in the Woman's Journal, vol. 11, no. 40 (October 2, 1880). Discusses the inequality of men and women in Christian doctrine. Uses her observations of social conditions in the South to emphasize the necessity of women's rights and improved educational practices.

Written from Roadside. Lucretia Mott shares news about family members and lists the items she is donating for Christmas. She recommends John Weiss's book, ''American Religion'' and notes that Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony ''ought to write often to the Golden Age.'' She discusses the growing support for Victoria Claflin Woodhull despite ''her unwise utterances as to the 'right of doing wrong.''' Mott is concerned about Josephine Griffing's health problems. She discusses Lucy Stone's decision to print H. Tracy Cutler's article complaining about Stanton in the Woman's Journal. She mentions the Laura Fair case, Theodore Tilton, and Isabella Beecher Hooker, her own advancing age, and others matters. She also briefly discusses the ''Alabama case'' between the U.S. and the U.K. and recent smallpox vaccinations at Swarthmore College. Pages 7-14 may be out of order. Partially written over a letter from Henry M. Laing dated 1871-12-23, and also partially written over a letter from C. L. Farrington to Lucretia Mott, dated 1871-12-08.

Written from Roadside. Lucretia Mott recounts her visit to New York to see Emily Faithfull give a lecture. Faithfull asked Lucretia to do an introduction for her, but Lucretia declined. She calls Faithfull's speech "1st rate." She mentions dining with William Lloyd Garrison Jr. and comments on his improvement after being involved in a train accident. She writes that she "must look up Mr. Higginson's protest in the Woman's Journal" and expresses her frustration that the woman suffrage movement has split into two bands. She bemoans how "broken up" her family is and expresses her love for her grandchildren. There is a drawing on the last page that was likely created by one of her grandchildren, for Lucretia complains that "these wasteful children will take such good paper rather than cut open envelopes for their nonsense."

Written from Roadside. Lucretia Mott shares news of family and friends and discusses the health issues of Marianna Mott. She mourns the recent death of Clarkson Taylor. She plans to show Elizabeth Cady Stanton's letters to Margaret Bright Lucas, whom she expects to have over for a visit in a few days. She writes of her "resolve to take no further part with the Boston Clique, but says she may go to the great meeting to be held in November, even though a letter in the Journal" raised her indignation. She also mentions Tilton's praise of Victoria, likely Victoria Claflin Woodhull.

Rebecca Lewis Fussell was Graceanna Lewis' sister. Lewis writes that she wrote an article that will be published in the "New Century." She discusses her farm and the birds and plants there, and says she has written to Andrew Dickson White at Cornell, who is chairing a committee that will judge her scientific charts. She also discusses a recent Peace Congress involving Julia Ward Howe, who she speaks very fondly of, and mentions "dear Lucretia Mott."

Undated fragment. Discusses the recipient's frustration over a small newspaper's lack of coverage of the mistreament of Filipinos and disagrees with the recipient's plan to stop reading the paper in response. Says that "slamming pew doors when the preacher is too practical always struck me as impotent protest, so also stopping one's paper." Briefly discusses the Woman's Journal and gives news of the death of Emma Brown Montgomery.

Alice Stone Blackwell was a suffragist, journalist, and human rights advocate. Written on Woman's Journal stationery. She apologizes for not including a fuller account of the anniversary of the Brooklyn Woman's Club in the Woman's Journal. Discusses the Journal's work with the suffrage movement and her belief that the argument of the "Antis" in Albany is feeble and inconsistent.

Alice Stone Blackwell was a suffragist, journalist, and human rights advocate. Written on Woman's Journal stationery. Apologizes for accidentally printing someone else's article rather than an article by Chapman on the same subject.

Certificate for one share in the Proprietors of the Woman's Journal. Made out to Martha Schofield. Information on the back says it was inherited by Schofield's niece Mary Schofield Ash Jenkins in 1917.
