Evans was the first licensed African American woman doctor in South Carolina; she was a graduate of Schofield Industrial School, and Martha Schofield became her mentor.

Golden; a 1923 notice that the subscriptions to the "Bird Lore" periodical Howland had paid for several African American schools was about to run out; an 1883 account of the finances of Howland's school in Heathsville, Virginia; an 1882 invitation to a meeting of the Cayuga County Historical Society; an undated request for a membership fee from the National Association of Audubon Societies; an 1867 order for Howland's transportation from Heathsville to Baltimore; and an 1882 petition to the U.S. House of Representatives against the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Major Edward Deane was the assistant commissioner and chief superintendent of schools for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands in South Carolina. He informs Schofield that money has been appropriated for the Methodists to build a church and a school; he says the matter is out of his hands, even though he does agree with some of Schofield's arguments against it.

Alfred W. Nicholson was an educator and president of Bettis Academy for African Americans. Dr. Matilda A. Evans was the first African-American woman certified to practice medicine in South Carolina and advocated for improved healthcare of African Americans. Both Nicholson and Evans were students of Martha Schofield at the Schofield Normal and Industrial School in South Carolina. Mary Ash Jenkins was Martha Schofield's niece. Evans wants Nicholson to provide biographical material for and participate in the book she is writing about Schofield. Nicholson encloses the letter from Evans and says he will not participate in writing Schofield's biography unless explicitly asked by Jenkins.

Justus K. Jillson served as South Carolina's Superintendent of Education during the Reconstruction era. Tells Schofield that the teachers of her school must contact J. Newton Teague, the Treasurer of Barnwell County, to receive their pay.
