Seven short essays by Emily Howland's friend Mary White written in the summer of 1844. At least two are associated with Poplar Ridge Seminary. The compositions' subjects are hope, solitary reflection, friendship, the evils of Joseph Smith, the beauty of American nature and the stain of Mormonism, contentment, and the language of the eye. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and the Marquis de Lafayette are discussed in a number of the essays.

Depicts Emily Howland's gravestone, which bears the following inscription: "Emily Howland / November 20, 1827 / June 29, 1929 // She wished to have these / words upon her stone / I strove to realize / myself and to serve // purposes nobly fulfilled." A note on the back describes the location of the gravestone.

Page 2: Therese Hluchovsky thanks Howland for the food relief packet; writes that it reached her family at a time of great need when they were all "quite far from joy" and their seven children hadn't seen milk in months, let alone rice. Page 6: Elise Wiesterhold writes her thanks in the style of a prayer to the baby Jesus from Hilda, Herminie, Anna and Elga (presumably, her daughters). Page 8: Message from Franz Hojsa expressing raised hopes thanks to her help; says that he, his sick wife and seven children are in dire straights due to famine.

Written by Agnes L. Tierney, a Quaker minister, activist, educator, and friend of Emily Howland. Celebrates the recent passage of women's suffrage in New York state. Discusses the tragic nature of World War I and says that Tierney would "far rather submit to anything at the hands of the Germans - any physical indignity - rather than that any … young fellows should be degraded in mind and soul by the horrible necessities of warfare."
