Legal Document. Indenture for land and a messuage between James Campbell, Samuel Herbert Harvey, and Mary Campbell on the one part, and Byres Moir on the other part. Legal document is covered by a bifolio sheet of parchment and bound with the document by thin green ribbon on the left hand side. The cover contains a summary of the document's contents on the back but is blank on all other sides. At the top of the recto of the first page of the legal document, This Indenture is printed in black ink. To the left of and below the "T" is printed "J. Forshaw, Law Stationer, 14 North John St., Liverpool." To the right of "This Indenture" is a tax stamp (orange and white) for 10 shillings. The text of each page is bounded by red lines, and the left margin is rather wide. Manuscript components are cursive in black ink. Throughout the document, words such as "Between" and "whereas" appear in bold. Key elements of the document such as names, monetary amounts, and bolded words and phrases are underlined in red. Pencil (?) check marks appear in left margins. The verso of the last page of the legal document contains the signatures of James Campbell, Mary Campbell, witnesses, and a clerk. To the left of the right margin, a piece of green ribbon is woven through the parchment in such a way that four squares of the ribbon show on the verso. Four red wax seals are on each green square. Pinned to the top of the verso of the last page of the legal document is a printed piece of paper titled "Instructions for the Execution and Attestation of the Deed, and a paragraph with instructions on how to make the deed official follow. Recto of the last page contains a number of signatures. Verso of the last page contains additional writing in a second and third hand with additional signatures. First page has a large diagonal tear. Bottom of the last page is missing an 8.5 x 5.0 cm portion of parchment.

Legal document. Indenture for a messuage made between Richard Capel and Charles Cunningham in the County of Essex. Document consists of two pieces of parchment, the top piece being a continuation of the bottom piece. On the recto of the beginning of the document is "This Indenture, printed in large black ink letters. Within the capital T" is a seal in black ink which is topped by a crown and contains a coat of arms that is surrounded by the words "Honi soit qui mal y pense." Manuscript is cursive in black ink. Text is bounded on the top, left, and right sides by double or triple red ink lines. Tax stamps for 1 shilling and six pence are attached to each document. The bottom of the documents are folded up together and sealed by means of faded red string. Attached to the strand of string in the middle of the fold is a red wax seal with the side portrait of a bearded man facing left. The signature of Richard Capel is on either side of the seal. Prickings on the left and right edges. Top portion of the bottom piece of parchment has a wavy-cut edge. The verso of the beginning sheet of parchment contains a summary of the document as well as the signatures of witnesses (Elizabeth Lasinby and Mathias Deye).

Legal document. Indenture relating to the selling (?) of a joint business and a list of debts owed to the business. Contract is between Edward Ffrancklin, citizen of Loudon, and Thomas Stokes. Cursive. Black ink. Text begins with an 8-line capital "T" which begins "This Indenture, also in large, bold black letters. The top (and interior of some letters) are elaborately decorated with swirling lines and dots. Inside of the capital T" contains a stamped seal that reads "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE." The top of the seal has a crown, and inside of the surrounding text is a coat of arms that contains lions stantant and fleur-de-lis in the top left and bottom right quarters. The top right quarter contains a lion rampant, and the bottom left corner contains the stringed argent. Wide left and bottom margin. Text runs to the right edge of the parchment. The verso contains a summary of the indenture and is signed by B. Pratt, Samuell Heap..., and Watson/Winston (?) Birling. Strands of parchment at the bottom of the page contain a red wax pendent seal, to which is attached a list of who owes how much money to T. Stokes and E. Ffrancklin. Writing on both sides. Blind ruling. Attached to this by means of parchment is an additional, smaller piece of parchment with tallies of debts created by T. Stokes. The seal that connects the documents is just barely attached.

Legal Document. Indenture for a messuage between Robert Miller Forbes (first part) and Isaac Clementson (second part) and Henry Whitear (third part). On the recto, This Indenture, printed in large black ink letters, begins the document. Within the capital "T" is a seal in black ink which is topped by a crown and contains the words "Honi soit qui mal y pense." In the hook of the "T" is printed "Morris Parchment Dealer Bermondsey." Manuscript is cursive in brown ink. The phrase "and whereas" appears in slightly larger and bolder letters. The text is bounded by red ink lines. Left margin contains a tax stamp for 15 shillings and a small black ink stamp containing a crown and "S.D./ V./3:6." Bottom of the document is folded up and sealed with three red wax seals on top of green ribbon. The seals contain the portrait of a beardless, short-haired man facing left. The signatures of Forbes and Clementson appear by the left and middle seals. The verso contains signatures of witnesses and a summary of the document's contents. Prickings on left side of the page. Brown ink ruling. Top of document has a wavy edge.

Building agreement between Claude Focques and Guillume Marchant (master masons and architects) and King Charles IX regarding royal buildings in Noyon-sur-Andelle, Gisors, Normandy. Cursive. Dark brown/black ink. This manuscript contains three different documents which have been sewn together and relate to the same building agreement. Bottom left of each recto has been pierced. First document is 3 pages written in cursive and contains a detailed estimate by Marchant and Focques of the amount of masonry and building materials required in the works at Noyon. Verso of the third page is blank. Second document is a 2 page agreement for work, signed by Claude Focques and Guillme Marchant. Verso of the second page is blank. Third document is a public instrument setting forth the engagement of the two master masons, accompanied by a copy of a letter to Monsieur Durescu from the king apparently stating his approval of Durescu's bargain with G. Marchant and C. Focques and desiring the building to be put in hand at once. It is dated 3 December 1570 and signed by Pauraiy(?) and Parque (notaries?). The verso is blank. The verso of the last page contains a description of the document including the date 1570 and "Noyon." An English translation of the second document and a summary of the first and third documents accompany the manuscript.

Legal document. Indenture for the sale of a messuage (57 acres and 78 perches of land) in Honeybrook Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania to Daniel Graff by Jacob Graff and his wife Catherine for 1200 dollars. Recto: The top of the form reads "Printed and Sold by Manly & Orr, 43 Chestnut St." The blank portions of the printed document are filled in with cursive writing in black ink. The document contains a description of the exact location of the tract of land and mentions that Jacob and Catherine Graff received this land from Samuel Evans and his wife Christina and Samuel Semman(?) and his wife Sarah in April of 1844. Bottom of the recto contains four different sections. 1) A section that says that the document was sealed and delivered, signed by John Myers (Justice of the Peace of the County of Lancaster) and [?] Hayes. 2) A section bearing witness to the receipt of Daniel Graff's $1200 signed by Jacob Graff, John Myers, and Hayes. 3) A section saying that Catherine Graff independently agreed to the contract and was not forced to do so. 4) A section with the signatures of Jacob and Catherine Graff containing simplistic penwork seals containing the word "Seal." Bottom right of the verso contains a description of the document. The top left of the verso has a note that says the document was recovered in the recorder's office in Chester County in Books J.5 vol. 116, page 99 on April 1st 1853. The words "Witness the seal of my office in West Chester. Thos. Walter Rect." appear below this. The paper is embossed (from the verso) with a circular seal which contains text and a decorative image.

Last will and testament of Finas de Sancto Cirico, daughter of Guillelmus de Sancto Cirico. Gothic bastard hand. Brown ink. Written by a clerk of the diocese of Cahors/Caturcens, one Guillaume d'Aurillac of Figeac. The entire will is contained on the recto. A fine, 10-line initial "I" begins the text. The two bottom lines, which contain the affirmation of the will by the clerk Guillaume d'Aurillac, are separated from the main body of the will by a 1-line space. A penwork notarial seal lies within the final two lines. It is a 5 petal flower contained within a square that is formed by the intersections of two vertical and two stretched horizontal ovals. Centered between the space of the vertical ovals is a stem that comes to a bulbous end. The verso is blank save one element of writing at the top, one element of writing at the bottom, and one element written sideways on the left side. Verso contains writing that says "Testament of Finas...[3 lines] 1288." Metal point ruling. Knife prickings. [Contained in the will: the date and a mention of current pope, Pope Nicholas IV; reasons for writing the will; burial arrangements ("cimiterio Sancte Sperie") and cost; what will be given to the church after her death; heirs and inheritance allotments; witnesses to the will; a note by the scribe confirming that he wrote the will. Names included in the will: Arnaldus Bonafos (son), the brothers of Delscalmelhs, the little brothers of Martellus, the little brothers and "Predictores" of Figiacus, the Figiacian brothers of Carmelita, Raymundus de Sancto Cirico, Deodatus Juorus, Raymundus Brunius, Johannes Valetius (presbyter), Martinus Guilan (clericus), Aymericus de Rupe (domicellus), Galhardus del Causanel, Stephanus and Bernardus Guilan. Other proper nouns (places?, people?): Hidoladilha, Doladilhas.] Transcript available.

Top margin of the recto of the first page contains descriptions of the document in a rather modern hand. The recto of the last page contains cursive writing in brown ink that is perpendicular to the main text, followed by signatures. Verso of the last page of text contains signatures to the contract as well as writing in about 5 different hands. Pages are attached by twine.

Legal Document. Indenture for the lease of a farm by William Westbrook to Jacob Martin. On the recto, This Indenture, printed in large black ink letters, begins the document. Within the capital "T" is a seal in black ink which is topped by a crown and contains the words "Honi soit qui mal y pense." Elaborate line design fills the top left corner of the document. Manuscript components are mostly cursive in light brown ink. Throughout the document, words and phrases such as "yielding and paying" and "provided" are in printed (not cursive) manuscript and bolder and larger than the rest of the text. The bottom of the document is folded up and sealed with a red wax seal on top of a strip of parchment. The seal contains a coat of arms with the face of a lion(?). William Westbrook's signature appears near the seal. Wide left margin. Verso contains a "Schedule of goods within men[tioned?], written in a second hand in black ink (left side). On the right side of the verso is a lengthy note in a third hand, signed by Jacob Martin, that says that Mr. Martin discharged the lease to Thomas Fford. Three tax stamps for six pence each, still connected to one another, are attached to the right of this note. A summary of the document is also on the verso. A note on the verso reads, Mr. Fford surrendered this lease to Wm. Westbrook...1720 on signing a new Lease for 21 years." Knife prickings on the left side of the page.
