Esther Ann Jacobs was Graceanna Lewis' cousin. She asks if Lewis has been circulating petitions and expresses her outrage for the gag resolution that has been proposed.

Mary Taylor Stone taught with Martha Schofield at the Schofield School in Aiken, South Carolina, from 1868 to 1869. She has recently married Major William Stone, and they have been travelling since their wedding. She writes that she is looking for more lucrative employment for Schofield despite Schofield telling her that she expected to teach as long as she stayed in the South. She adds that she longs for the day when "women get paid as they deserve to be." Alludes to having children in the future. She describes her Christmas activities and plans visit Aiken soon.

Written by Agnes L. Tierney, a Quaker minister, activist, educator, and friend of Emily Howland. Discusses their upcoming trip and her travel arrangements. Asks if Howland would object to a Quaker named Hannah Morris accompanying them on their trip, saying "she is not a shockable person - is a believer in Suffrage and greatly interested in negro schools."

Records White's trip "on a tour to the South and West" with her father Josiah White and sister Hannah White Richardson. The largest part of the journal concerns travel in Virginia and West Virginia, but the full route ran to Washington via Baltimore, then through Virginia and West Virginia to Huntington via Harpers Ferry, along the Ohio River to Cincinnati and Louisville, overland across Kentucky through Lexington, back along the Ohio River to Pittsburgh, and overland to Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Passages throughout the journal pay attention to the state of settlement and "improvement" of the land they passed through, as well as its natural resources, geology, and fitness for farming. Other themes include railroads and canals, as well as occasional observations on the "blighting effects of slavery" on the "spirit of enterprise" of Virginia and Kentucky's white inhabitants. Incidents of particular interest include an account of hearing Congress's debates on the Fortification Bill; lengthy descriptions of several famous geological formations in Virginia, including the Grand Caverns at Weyers Cave, the Natural Bridge, and a number of hot springs; a brief biography of a free African American man who the travelers hired to drive them from Louisville to Frankfort; and a brief meeting with Joseph Ritner, governor of Pennsylvania, in Harrisburg.
