Mary Taylor Stone taught with Martha Schofield at the Schofield School in Aiken, South Carolina, from 1868 to 1869. She describes going to the theater and seeing Booth, likely Edwin Booth, in Hamlet. She says that she felt Hamlet was more of a comedy than a tragedy. She also discusses some of her other recent activities, including getting several dresses which were likely for her upcoming wedding to Major William Stone. She encloses a letter written to her by Fannie A. Tudor in which she describes plans to go to Wadmalaw Island where she will be mistress of a colored school. Tudor writes that "there is a wide field for usefulness among the freedmen."

Visted the Hospice of St. Bernard. Commented on the contrast between its pure and spitural inhabitants with the greasy, portly monks who regularly beg in the streets. Descriptions of local flowers and fruit. Swiss children and young adults are fine looking but the old people are some of the ugliest that she's ever seen, probably indicating a low intellectual state. English girls painfully pinch their waists and as they get older tend to get very fat, probably due to beer drinking. One rarely sees interesting faces as one might observe at home in a Wilburite Friends' meeting. Sidney (Sidney Taliaferro Boyer) would like dried corn and peaches.

Went to the university and the botanical garden. Enquires as to whether Hepsibeth Hussey has begun her school.
