Lincoln University Chester [County], [Pennsylvania] [December] 30th 1870 My Dear Friend, I will now take the pleasure to answer your last letter and to wish you a merry new year hoping you may live to see a good many. I received the Christmas presants you sent me, and that is all the Christmas I have had. I was very glad of the neck-tie and the little book and I thank you most kindly for them but Miss Martha I think you might have sent me your photograph for I would have been glad of it. Our session closed on the twenty first and [Top margin] Obanyon sends kind regards we are having vacation of two weeks and I have seen a good many Christmass but this one beat my time but I am thankly to God to see the day come. I was examined at the closing of the session on Catechism Arithmetic geography grammar and orthography, I don't know how high my grade will be, but Mr. Rendall toled me I did pritty well - when I get my greade I will send it to you. They are 135 students here now and they are all gone away to take Charistmas but about 25 or 30 and they cant get away. Mr Rendall gave me 5 [dollars] to pay my board during vacation. I have been working some here this vacation, I helped to clean out the ice house and I have been scrubing some rooms in the old building. I made 3.75 [dollars] cents and that is money enough to pay for my washing and to buy oil with. I went out skating last week for the first time I ever had a pair of skats on my feet but when I got on the ice my feet did not stay under me and I skated more on my back then I did on my feet, the other boys who could skate had their fun off of me and my name sake E. S. Scott. the ice is about to two foot thick and the snow is about one foot thick the people about here are sleigh rideing every day. You wanted to know if I was growing any I cannot tell myself wether I grow any or not if I do it is very lettle I get up very early [Crossed out: in] every morning and take a walk about a half mile before breakfast. I am boarding in the union [?] in the same building I seep in. My hand trumbles so much that I cannot write good. I had to stope drinking coffee and tea I got so nerver I have not heard from Mrs Ash for some time, gave my love to all I am yours truly Allen A. Scott
