War Department Bureau [Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands] Washington D.C. [October] 27 [1870] Miss [Martha] Schofield Your letter of the 24th [?] is received, I am directed to reply that [Major] Dean has been discharged, and the School work [inserted:of this Bureau] in [South Carolina] is done. I am sorry that the home at Aiken does not suit you, but as you appear to have [tea?] about at the time it was built, the mistakes occurred quite easily. You do not [?] any remedy. It would seem easy to remove the building a few feet; and if the proper school-lot is held by Trustees, I should think they would at once get your cement and move the house to their own land. Otherwise it will belong to [Page Break] you when the government should claim it and sell it. Nothing more can be done by this bureau which will require an explanation of money, as the funds are entirely exhausted. Very Respectfully E. Whittlesey [?]
