The humiliating defeat of 1744 caused the Turks to realize the back- ward eondition of their civilization. After the French Revolution of 1830 they entered upon a process of gradual Westernization. During the next half century, often referred to as'the Turk- ish Renaissance, a great influence was exerted upon the civilization of the Edst by the French, and especially by the philosopher poets.
