Single Leaf Manuscripts

Psalter. Pss. 38-48. Gothic textura quadrata. Black ink. The first column of the verso contains two lines of musical notation (music staff in red ink) followed by psalms. A 4-line capital "O" in red and blue ink occurs in the psalm portion of the first column. Capitals alternate in red and blue ink with red, brown, and faded gold decoration. Most capitals are slightly larger than 1 line, but some are 2 lines long. Prelimary drawing exists in metal point between columns and inside of capitals. Two columns. Writing on both sides. Knife prickings along the top edge. Blind ruling.

Legal Document. Gothic bastard hand. Brown ink. Bottom of the page is folded up 1.7 cm and sealed with 2 strands of parchment that are fed through the folded portion. Verso contains Sap[l]worth in gothic bastard hand in light brown ink. Just below this, Sap[l]worth, 21 Edw. III in modern hand appears. Verso reads "Phillips MS 31693."

Legal document. Indenture for a messuage from Joseph Murray of Gosport to Reverend John Bird of Hurminster. On the recto, This Indenture, printed in large black ink letters, begins the document. The interior of the "T" of "This" contains a printed image of King George III, and a lady angel or herald holding a horn is to his left on the exterior of the "T." Below King George is his coat of arms surrounded by the phrase "Honi soit qui mal y pense." A lion rampant guardant stands on the left of the seal, and a unicorn stands to the right of it. Manuscript components are mostly cursive in brown ink. Words such as "Witnesseth" and "between" are large and bold. The bottom of the document is folded up and sealed with a red wax seal on top of green ribbon. The signature of Joseph Murray is near the seal. The text is surrounded by faint brown ink lines. Left margin contains a 1 shilling tax stamp as well as a black ink stamp "X" inside of a circle. The verso contains the signatures of witnesses, a "retrieved" note, and a summary of the document's contents. Prickings on the left and right sides. Metal point ruling. Top of document has a wavy edge.

Arabic document. Black ink. Bottom, left, and right margins remain. Image of a animal without a head in black ink in the bottom margin. Verso is blank.

Sermons. Gothic cursive in black ink. Some letters which begin sentences are colored in with red ink. Words and phrases are underlined in red ink. A 3-line red capital "R" is on the verso. Page is split in half vertically and has been reattached. Evidence of the left hand column of the verso is still visible by the seam.

Legal document. Cursive in brown ink. Pages tied together with string. Recto of the first page begins with "première Septembre 1665." Top line is twice as large as the rest of the text and decoratively written. Main text begins with a personal name followed by the titles "chevalier" and "marquis." Two small sections of writing in the left margin. Second and third pages have writing on both sides. The fourth page has a tear which is stitched together. Recto of the fourth page is blank except for some writing in a second hand which appears in the top right corner ("17., 300, and de rente").

Arabic Document. Black ink writing with some textual marks in red ink. Paragraph or verse markers (?) are gold leaf circles with blue ink dots on the top and bottom of the circle and red ink dots on the left and right. On each page, writing is surrounded by a thin gold leaf border, surrounded by a blank area, surrounded by a thicker gold leaf border. Three additional lines, two in black ink and one in red ink surround the thicker of the gold borders. Some notes (?) in black ink appear in the bottom margins. All pages are the same, save the first page. The recto of the first page is blank. Centered on the verso of the first page is a circle containing text in black ink, with a gold leaf border inside of a red ink and gold leaf square. Above and below this are rectangular gold leaf panels with writing in white. Gold mountains with red and blue ink decoration are at the top. All of this is surrounded by a thick gold border. On the exterior of this panel is gold floral design. Ink and gold on the verso of the first page are smeared.

Legal Document. Indenture for a messuage between Richard Green, John Hooper, Elizabeth Drinkwater, Thomas Meek, and Thomas Elliot. Document consists of three pieces of parchment, the top pieces being a continuation of the bottom piece. On the recto, This Indenture, printed in large black ink letters, begins the document. Within the capital "T" is a seal in black ink which is topped by a crown and contains a coat of arms that is surrounded by the words "Honi soit qui mal y pense." Inside the hook of the "T" is printed "Walker; Parchment dealer. Bermondsey." On each page, manuscript components are cursive in dark brown or black ink. The text is bounded on all sides by a double line in red ink. Left margin of the beginning page of the document contains a three pound tax stamp. Each of the other pages contains a one pound tax stamp. The bottom of the documents are folded up and sealed in four places with green ribbon beneath red wax seals. By the seals are the signatures of Richard Green and John Hooper and "the marks" of Thomas Meek. Verso contains witness signatures and a summary of the document. Metal point ruling. Prickings on left and right edges.

Phylactery book in the shape of a cross made of wood. Two metal hinges run along the left edge. The right edge contains metal a fastening hook. The inside is empty and has green cloth glued to the interior panels.

Ecclesiastical law. Decretals of Pope Boniface VIII (Book 6). Gothic hand. Each page has writing on both sides and is similar in appearance. Two columns of principal text are in brown ink and surrounded by two columns of commentary in black ink. The principal text is slightly larger than the commentary. 2-line capitals occur at significant points in the commentary and principal text. Each of these capital letters is colored with blue or red ink, and is filled in with and surrounded by decorative line design in the opposite color of ink of the letter. Paragraph markers occur in alternating red and blue ink in commentary and principal text. Notes in Gothic bastard hand in dark brown ink, light brown ink, and black ink appear in the margins of all pages. The recto of the first page has highlighting in the form of maniculae and vertical lines drawn to the side of pieces of text in light brown ink. The numeral "III" in red ink with dashes extending from either side in blue ink is centered in the top margin. The verso of page 1 has the numeral "V" in blue ink and "I" in red ink centered in the top margin. Principal text has interlinear notes. Some of the text and commentary has several parentheses or short vertical lines which someone has drawn as an aid in seeing word divisions, perhaps. The recto of page 2 has a blue and red ink numeral "VI" in the top margin. The verso of page 2 has the numeral "III" in red ink and a catchword running perpendicular to the text in the bottom margin.
